Ulisses Correia e Silva resigns from his seat in Congress and steps away from active politics
Praia, June 20, 2026 (Bravanews — The former Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Ulisses Correia e Silva, who had been elected to the National Assembly in the last legislative elections, officially announced his resignation from the National Assembly of the 11th Legislature. The decision marks the end of a cycle spanning several decades dedicated to public service and political leadership in the country.
In a statement, the outgoing minister confirmed that he had formally submitted his request to the President of the National Assembly, explaining that the decision was a natural consequence of the public stance he took on the evening of May 17.
“Parliament is one of the main guarantors of democracy and stability. I had the privilege of serving as a member of parliament for several years until 2008. Now is the time to continue my life outside of active politics,” said Ulisses Correia e Silva.
With this move, the former leader of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) brings to a close a long and distinguished career at the forefront of Cape Verdean politics. Over the years, Correia e Silva held positions of great importance in the government, having served the country as Secretary of State, Minister, Member of Parliament, Mayor of Praia, and Prime Minister.
In his farewell message, he expressed deep gratitude for the path he has taken. “I thank all Cape Verdeans and my party, the MpD, for the opportunities they have given me to serve my country (...) I am grateful,” he concluded.
His resignation now paves the way for the transition and replacement of his seat in the MpD’s parliamentary caucus, at a time when the Cape Verdean political landscape is being reshaped following the recent election.
